TINOLANG TAHONG (STEWED MUSSELS IN GINGER)
Mussels is a favorite in our household. Its tasty, nutritious, easy to cook, and very affordable.
Stewed Mussels in Ginger (Tinolang Tahong) is one way we enjoy it.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF MUSSELS
Mussels are low in calories and fat yet high in protein. Packed with vitamins and minerals, they are a good source of vitamin A and B12 as well as zinc, iron and omega 3 fatty acids.

BUDGET RECIPE
This recipe is good for 4 and costs less than Php100 ($2).
As of this writing, prices of mussels range between Php60-120 per kilo depending on size.
The key to buying cheap mussels is the size. The bigger the size of the mussels, the more expensive it gets.
This recipe uses small to medium sized mussels (Php60-80).
COOKING TIPS
Do not overcook mussels. Meat becomes tough and rubbery the longer you cook it.
Once cooked, shells of mussels should open. If they don’t, discard it.
SERVING SUGGESTION
For a full meal, serve with steamed rice.
Tinolang Tahong
Ingredients
- 1 kIlo Mussels Washed and drained
- 1 bunch Chili Leaves
- 1 thumb-sized Ginger sliced thinly
- 3 cloves Garlic minced
- 1 medium sized Onion diced
- 2 cups Water
- Fish sauce to taste
- vegetable oil
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pot and sauté ginger, garlic and onion.
- Add in the mussels and sautè for a minute .
- Pour in water. Bring to a boil and simmer until shells have opened.
- Add fish sauce to taste, top with chili leaves, then turn off heat. The residual heat will be enough to cook the leaves.
